Essential Islamic guidance

How to pray Salat al-Janazah

The funeral prayer is performed standing, without bowing or prostration. It generally includes four takbirs, praise of Allah, blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ, supplication for the deceased and taslim. Follow the imam and local mosque's guidance on variations in practice.

Janazah prayer etiquette

Approach the funeral with dignity, sincerity and respect for the bereaved. Follow the congregation and mosque instructions, and avoid unnecessary disturbance.

Sunnah practices following death

Islamic funeral arrangements generally prioritise respectful washing (ghusl), shrouding (kafan), Janazah prayer and timely burial. Seek guidance from qualified local funeral services and scholars for practical requirements.

Du'as and actions for the deceased

Pray for Allah's forgiveness and mercy for the deceased. Charity on their behalf and settling outstanding obligations may also be appropriate; seek scholarly guidance where needed.

Visiting the graveyard

Offer the prescribed greeting and supplicate for those buried there. Maintain respect, avoid stepping on graves and follow cemetery regulations.
